Registration of Death

A death that occurs in Scotland must be registered within 8 days.


How to Register:

Registrations are now completed by telephone. You must book an appointment through any Registrar’s office in Scotland.


Who can Register the Death:

  • Anyone present at the death.
  • A relative of the deceased.
  • The deceased’s executor.
  • The occupier of the premises where the death occurred, for example, a nursing home manager.
  • If none of the above, anyone who knows the details of the deceased, for example a neighbour.
     

Documents Required by the Registrar:

  • Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (Form 11).
  • Birth Certificate.
  • Marriage or Civil Partnership Certificate (if applicable).
  • Divorce papers (if applicable).
  • NHS Medical Card.


Documents You Will Receive:

  • Certificate of Registration of Death (Form 14).
  • Form BD8 – to inform the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
  • Abbreviated Death Certificate – free of charge.
  • Full Death Certificate – available for:
    • £10 at time of registration.
    • £15 if purchased later.

(Full certificates are often needed for legal, financial, and business purposes)

We understand that using public transport during a time of bereavement can be difficult. To make things a little easier, we always have a car and driver available to take bereaved families to the Registrar’s Office, the florist, our funeral home to visit a loved one, or to any other appointments related to the funeral arrangements.
